Why Getting Rest is Crucial for New Moms
A great night of sleep is truly a gift, but for new moms, it’s a necessity!
Sure, it’s well-meaning when people tell you “sleep when the baby sleeps”, but most people find that to be both extremely difficult, and the best time to actually get a few things done. Many people have more than one child as well, so sleeping during the day isn’t an option.
However, sleep is not just a nice-to-have, it is what you need to be the best mom to your child(ren).
Sleep deprivation is physically and emotionally draining. Without rest, you may experience:
- Problems concentrating and memory issues
- Irritability, mood swings, and anxiety
- Decreased immune system function
- Weight gain
- Increased risk for postpartum depression and even suicidal thoughts
Proper rest is beneficial for both you and the baby, because you will have better health, more patience, and increased brain function.
Some of the ways new moms can achieve restful nights include:
- Sharing nighttime duties with your partner – alternating nights or splitting up the night
- Family assistance
- Postpartum doulas
- Overnight newborn care (provided through Mom’s Best Friend, with a caregiver who can help with sleep training)
Even if you are nursing, you don’t have to do it on your own. Your partner or overnight caregiver can help by heating pumped bottles (or if you prefer, bringing the baby to you), and then handling the burping, soothing, changing, and/or getting the baby back down.
