If you’ve been scrolling through job boards lately, you might have noticed a shift. The job descriptions look a little different. Families aren’t just asking for childcare anymore, they’re looking for someone to help manage the ecosystem of their home. We are hearing this from nanny agencies around the country as well.
The Rising Value of Nanny Careers
Families have been investing in premium, multi-faceted roles, which has pushed the industry toward these higher salary tiers. If you have been in the nanny industry for the past decade, you’ve seen a significant change.
- The cumulative inflation rate for the U.S. dollar is approximately 33.77%
- The cumulative nanny inflation rate for Austin is 65.42%
- The cumulative nanny inflation rate for Houston is 63.67%
Pay rates have almost doubled the rate of inflation because of the importance of the roles.

Today’s parents are busier than ever, and they want a partner to help keep the household from spinning out of control.
Elevating Nanny Careers Through Partnership
When you transition into a role that includes household support, you move from being a childcare provider to a key household partner. This shift creates deep job security because you become the person who makes the entire home function.
To be clear, this isn’t about being a housekeeper (we will never have you scrubbing toilets!). Some ways nannies/family assistants have added value include:
- Planning meals and ideally making dinner for the entire family several nights per week
Logistics such as scheduling and/or meeting a contractor, or making dentist or doctors’ appointments - Resetting the home (vacuuming high-traffic play areas or Swiffering the kitchen after meal prep) so the family returns to a peaceful space
- Noticing that the milk is low, the trash needs to get emptied, or that the kids need a snack in the car while you take them to soccer, and just handling it before you are asked
- Planning and executing curriculum or milestone-based activities for the children, starting as early as infancyMany nannies find that these roles offer much more long term job security. You are able to keep your full income even as the children grow and their needs change over time.
You might be thinking, “I just want to work with kids.” That’s fair, but it’s important to know that it’s becoming far less common, especially for full-time roles.
If you’re ready to level up, start mentioning these skills in your profile and in interviews. Talk about your love for meal planning, your organizational skills, or your ability to see a need and fill it without being asked. The most successful nannies today are the ones who can say, “I’ve got this!”
