Newborn Care Specialist Training Resources

In our recent Nanny Survey, many of you shared that you’re interested in becoming eligible for overnight newborn care positions. That’s great to hear, and we love seeing so much interest from caregivers who want to grow in this area. If you’ve visited our job board recently, you’ve likely noticed a steady stream of overnight newborn care opportunities. These roles are incredibly rewarding, but they do require a strong foundation of experience. Families count on us to send caregivers who are ready to jump in with confidence, especially first-time parents who rely on their caregiver for support, guidance, and peace of mind.

To be considered for these roles, you’ll need hands-on experience and references. Our families are looking for someone who can take the lead without training or direction. Common responsibilities include:

  • Handling all nighttime feedings, diaper changes, and soothing
  • Folding baby laundry during sleep stretches
  • Keeping the nursery clean and restocked
  • Washing and sterilizing bottles and pump parts used overnight
  • Helping with a consistent routine and early sleep conditioning
  • Keeping a log of feedings, diaper changes, sleep patterns and other relevant information

Some families post their needs on sites like care.com, Facebook, Indeed, and Sittercity. These platforms can be helpful for gaining early experience. If you are not yet landing these opportunities, or want to become more competitive, newborn care training is a great next step.

To be listed as a Newborn Care Specialist (NCS) with Mom’s Best Friend, we require at least 15 hours of formal newborn training. Since there is no industry-wide certification, we accept training from several reputable programs that offer courses online. Some that we recommend are:
